Menopause and joint pain - the causes and how to ease it
What is the connection between menopause and arthritis? OverviewStrogen can play a role in the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Estrogen is a hormone found in both men and women, although women have greater amounts of it. During menopause, women experience a decrease in estrogen levels. OA is seen in postmenopausal women, which has led researchers to explore the possible relationship between OA and menopause. Keep reading to learn more about this connection. Arthritis refers to any painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. In addition to , the other two forms of arthritis are: AO is the most common form of arthritis. The inflammation and pain of OA results from the degradation of cartilage between the joints. Joints commonly affected include knees, shoulders and hips. In 2009, researchers examined earlier estrogen and arthritis studies, and found evidence to support a connection between estrogen and joint health. Researchers could not determine the exact role of estrogen in OA, however. In another case, the researchers remarked the inclusive results regarding the role of estrogen in the OA. They agreed that the OA is more commonly seen in women who have gone through menopause. They have also examined the use of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) for OA treatment. Data on the effectiveness of this treatment method are not conclusive. Since 2016, researchers examined the use of estrogen and selective receptor modulators in managing OA symptoms. Researchers found some promising results, but recommended the need for higher quality studies before suggesting the use of this treatment. Is the ERT safe? You may have an additional risk for OA if: OA symptoms include: Symptoms vary depending on the severity and location of the affected joint. If you experience chronically at least two OA symptoms, consult your doctor. They can provide an adequate evaluation of your joint and symptoms. Your doctor is likely to perform some tests, including: OA is a chronic condition. No cure. However, you can manage OA symptoms in various ways: Your doctor may also prescribe medications to reduce inflammation, such as (Voltaren-XR). In some situations, a cortisone injection of your doctor may also help reduce your pain. Surgery is sometimes recommended, such as an arthroscopy or a replacement of joints. Surgery is usually reserved for serious cases. Older women have a higher risk for AO. Menopause and estrogen levels seem to play a role in this relationship, but more research is needed. You may not be able to prevent OA, but there are some things you can do to help keep your health together: Last medical review on May 11, 2017 related stories Read this next set of words
